One Handed

Greetings Gentle Readers,

Just wanted everyone to know that I will be a bit sidelined for the next few weeks. I am having a surgical procedure today on my right wrist for carpal tunnel. The procedure is done endoscopically using only a 1/4 inch incision and takes only about seven minutes. The surgeon told me that it actually takes longer to sterilize my hand then to do the actual cutting. 🙂 I’ve been experiencing numbness in my hands for about  a year now and despite doing exercises and wearing braces, it has not improved. Unlike my typing skills, which have gone seriously down hill, which is a bit problematic, since I write for a living! I will not be able to type with this hand for about 3 weeks. We are also going on vacation the first two weeks of February, during most of which I will have no internet access. Just didn’t want anyone worrying.

Things are continuing to improve in terms of the personal problems I have been dealing with and I am working on a new post about the work I have been doing around shame in therapy. Bit of a slog though, I am very much struggling to articulate what I have learned, it’s still all a bit new. My very kind boss bought me a copy of Dragon software so I can control my computer using voice commands and it included a license for my home system. So I may take it out for a spin and try to finish the post. OK, after the anesthesia wears off! See you all soon!

I’ll be thinking of you, and praying for complete healing. The vacation sounds like an awesome plan to relax afterwards. Don’t think too much about this stuff you deserve some R&R after the holidays, and then surgery. Peace be with you AG, and thank you for everything you do, it makes a difference for me!!!!

Interested to know if you have read or listened to Brene Brown on shame? I’m doing an online group that is doing art jounaling while reading her book “The Gifts of Imperfection,” and I’m enjoying it. She is a sociologist, so of course she approaches it from a more “big picture” than would a therapist, but she is wonderful. Very down home and open. I just discovered your blog and I’m so excited. I’ve read lots of Daniel Siegel and some other attachment work, as well as lots of other books about healing and addiction. For a long time, I wondered why I was such a hot mess when my parents were such good folks, but I have learned a lot about what I needed and missed out on, even thought they were wonderful people, just doing the best they knew how with how they had been raised. Now I’m in therapy and muddling along. Thanks for sharing so openly!

Amy, you sound a lot like me. It is hard to reconcile the emotional pain that comes with inadequate parenting to the same people that others see as wonderful. Trying to set boundaries along with some empathy towards parents is helping me along towards better emotional health. AT, hope you are healing well. I know you won’t see this now, as you are getting a long deserved vacation! Hope you are enjoying life and spoiling yourself! Xoxo Ann

Thanks to all of you for your well wishes!! We had a lovely vacation in the Carribbean floating about on the big blue sea, far away from anything polar 🙂 with lots of relaxation and sunshine. I read five fluffy silly books and did little else.

I saw the surgeon for follow-up on Thursday and am very happy to report my hand has been cleared and I am once again a fully functional death star that can type with two hands! So now I am attempting to catch up. I very much appreciate everyone’s understanding and patience. 😀

Amy, welcome to my blog and thanks for commenting! I am a big fan of Brene Brown having discovered her through Ted Talks. I’ve read several of her books. And you have my deep respect if you’ve read a lot of Dan Seigel. The man is brilliant but not a light read! 🙂 It sounds like you are doing good work and I am glad that understanding attachment has provided you with so much insight. It was a real game changer for me.
